I am the proud momma of Sgt. Matthew Ryan Soper, KIA 6/06/07. Matthew was serving his second tour in Iraq when he was killed by an IED. He served with the 1461st transportation company from his hometown of Jackson MI. Matthew was the lead gunner in his unit and had found an amazing 23 IED's , saving countless lives, and serving his country. He was one of eight children, and leaves behind an emptiness most can only imagine. This poem that was written by Matthew was found in his belongings that were sent home, and I just wanted to share it with you. I am that which others do not want to be.I went where others feared to go and didwhat others failed to do.I asked nothing from those who gavenothing and painfully accepted the thoughtof eternal loneliness...should I fail.I have seen the face of terror, felt thestinging cold of fear, and enjoyed the sweetflavor of victory.I have cried, pained, and hoped, but most ofall, I am living a time that others have forgotten. At least some day I will be able to say that I was proud of what I did and proud of who I am.I fought for my country and I am "An AmericanSoldier. As you salute our American hero's who are serving our country, please remember mine. He was my gift to all of you, and his name is Matthew.God bless our troops, and God bless America. Thank you, Shirley Soper, Matthew's momma
